Presence Film
Soderbergh tests his creative boundaries in this clever paranormal narrative filmed completely through the eyes of the phantom. As a family featuring mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe occupies their new suburban house, the lens – representing the ghost – follows them around. Chloe seems aware of the poltergeist, and it looks like protective of her. Yet what is the reason? This is an entertaining concept that doesn't outstay its welcome, including a revelation that may be unexpected. October 11th, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema Premiere

The Black Phone
Scott Derrickson's locked-room horror remains effective even without a follow-up. Located in 1978 Denver, a series of kidnappings has rendered the local kids frightened. Once Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and held captive in a dungeon, he dreads the worst. However, the disconnected phone mounted nearby repeatedly calls, with eerie communicators providing assistance, as the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen could save him. A genuinely scary movie. This Saturday, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel
This Dramatic Portrait
In the battle between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for materialism in this director's brilliantly over-the-top biopic of the disgraced religious broadcaster and her criminal husband. The actor portrays the venal Jim, who states early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple set about profiting from the American public's religious faith. It's a riot of bad interior design, overdone appearance and bad faith, however Jessica Chastain achieves to present Tammy Faye with compassion. Tuesday 14 October, 1.15am, Film4

The two stars are masters of calm composure, leading to a delightful mental battle of fact versus fiction takes place.
