Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such treatments must be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified rebound.

The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have stopped the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
