"When are you interviewing Haim?" a message pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

There's just one problem: I also longs to be Haim's additional sibling. What's more, we are not alone. Several famous supporters have publicly coveted the role.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their path performing shows at local delicatessens with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the best bands, they're a close gang. Their music videos often feature them marching in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such unfettered joy you can't help but think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a bass'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the trio. "It is the greatest honor. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire young girls to start a band."

"And thus all gets an invitation to be the next Haim sister."

Grammy Milestone

The band are connecting from their homes, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the nomination isn't lost on the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major milestone," adds Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the pioneers that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Humour

The album was born from a period of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that unique transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The words detail endings and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in the moment who they are becoming.

"I love summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to consciously practice ignoring the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Style

That developed confidence demanded a fresh approach – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the drums.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Laughter

The band's honesty inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic misadventures.

Someone ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Future

One can easily sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their standing in the music world.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide following.

However Haim will consistently be their top focus.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was four," shares Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
