A group of seven alleged members of German far-left group stand trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was responsible for targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the American move and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or are in custody.”
